Bed linen quickly fades and loses its vibrancy if washed blindly. The correct wash cycle, a gentle detergent, and a few simple rules followed in luxury hotels can help maintain color and appearance for a long time, according to Southern Living.
Where to start
Check the fabric. Each fabric requires specific care. Cotton sheets can withstand higher temperatures, which helps eliminate microbes and dust mites.
Microfiber sheets need cooler water to prevent damage and pilling. Microfiber should also be washed separately to avoid lint transfer and hair accumulation.
Special fabrics like linen and silk require extra care, usually delicate cycles and cold water, to preserve integrity and softness.
Recommended water temperature. Warm water effectively cleans without excessive wear. For cotton sheets, hot water can be used occasionally for deep cleaning.
Delicate fabrics like silk and linen should always be washed in cold water to maintain quality and extend lifespan.
Wash separately. Wash sheets separately to avoid tangling with other items and ensure thorough cleaning. This also prevents lint transfer and excessive wrinkling.
Thorough cleaning. Regular washing reduces allergens and dust mites, creating a healthier sleeping environment. Make sure you’re not allergic to any detergent you plan to use.
How to wash properly
Preparation. Remove pillowcases and duvet covers first. Shake well to remove dirt or debris. Check for stains and pre-treat them before putting the items in the washing machine.
Pre-treat stains. Apply a stain remover to any spots. Leave for about 15 minutes to dissolve. For stubborn stains, gently rub with a soft brush or sponge before washing.
Drying. Air drying is best. It preserves the life of the fabric and reduces energy consumption.
Use low or medium heat in the dryer to prevent shrinking and damage. Delicate fabrics should always be dried on the lowest setting (or without heat).
How often to wash
Bed linen accumulates dead skin cells since your body contacts it for 6–10 hours a day. Therefore, it’s best to wash sheets 1–2 times per week.
Avoid using fabric softener when washing bed linen. Softeners can leave residues that reduce the absorbency of natural fibers.
