Black clothes fading after washing? This one mistake is to blame
The main mistake when washing black clothes (photo: magnific)
Even expensive black clothes can lose their appearance after just a few washes due to a common but often unnoticed mistake, according to Southern Living.
The biggest mistake everyone makes
Exposure to high temperatures during washing and tumble drying is the fastest way to accelerate fading of black clothing.
It is better to wash dark clothes in cool water and air-dry them away from direct sunlight. If this is not possible, set the dryer to the lowest heat level.
Why high temperature is harmful to black clothing:
- Dye (especially black dye) fades faster at 40–60°C
- Fabric fibers expand, allowing dye to escape more easily
The optimal washing temperature is 20–30°C (sometimes up to 40°C if heavily soiled). It is better to use detergents designed for dark fabrics.
Other mistakes during washing
Not turning clothes inside out
During washing, black clothes rub against other items, causing fabric abrasion. This can damage fibers, making clothes look old, worn, and faded.
That is why you should always turn black clothes inside out, and also close all zippers and fasteners to prevent snagging or tearing. Never overload the washing machine drum so that clothes can move freely.
In addition, hand washing is a better option.
Using the wrong cycle
Too-long washing cycles and high-speed spinning lead to fabric wear.
Use a delicate cycle and the lowest final spin speed.
Using too much detergent
If too much laundry detergent is used, it can leave soapy residue on black fabrics, making them look dull. This is a common complaint with modern washing machines, which use less water than older top-loading machines.
Always measure the amount of detergent. Use a dispenser or add detergent to the bottom of an empty washing machine. Never pour detergent directly onto dark clothing.
Not sorting laundry
Always sort and wash items of similar colors together to protect light-colored clothes. Lint from light towels and cotton clothing can make black clothes look dull.
Washing too often
Black clothes will look new for longer if washed less frequently. Instead of putting clothes in the laundry basket after every wear, check them for signs of dirt. Most black jeans and trousers can be worn more than once between washes.
