White House made statement on timing of Congressional approval of aid to Ukraine
The White House wants Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson to bring the issue of aid to Ukraine to the table immediately, according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
"I cannot speak to their schedule. We want this to happen immediately. Right away. We first proposed this back in October of last year," she said, commenting on the statement by the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, that it will be considered after the Easter holidays, i.e., after April 9.
According to her, the aid package to Ukraine will be approved in the House of Representatives, as it has bipartisan support if it is put up for discussion.
"We encour- — we would encourage and continue to encourage the Speak- — Speaker Johnson to put that bill on the floor," Jean-Pierre said.
The press secretary noted, "We see what's happening — as we were talking about Ukraine specifically in your first question to me, we see what's happening in Ukraine. They're losing ground and — on the battlefield. And that is because — partly because — why Russia is being even more aggressive is because the inaction of Congress."
Without US assistance
For several months now, the United States has practically not been transferring new weapons to Ukraine. This is due to the fact that Congress cannot approve new funding for supplies.
The US Senate has already passed a bill providing about $60 billion to Ukraine. However, the document has not yet passed the House of Representatives. Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson refuses to bring the initiative to a vote.
