White House and Capitol being fenced off in case of riots
In the United States of America, fencing is being installed near the White House, the Capitol, and the residence of Vice President Kamala Harris. Federal and district authorities are preparing for possible unrest after the presidential election, according to The Washington Post.
Although the Washington police claim there is no threat, eight-foot metal fences were erected near the White House, the Treasury Department, and outside the Naval Observatory and Harris's residence. In particular, temporary barriers with warnings were installed around the perimeter of the Capitol.
Meanwhile, the DC police announced street closures in preparation for Harris' party at Howard University on election night.
“As authorities worked to fortify public assets, some business and property owners braced for the worst, surging private security, shoring up street-level windows and entrances, and finalizing contingency plans in anticipation of possible looting or rioting,” the agency adds.
US Capitol storming
The storming of the US Capitol took place on January 6, 2021, when supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Congressional building. This happened during the approval of the results of the presidential election, which was won by Joe Biden. The protesters, who believed that the election results were falsified, broke through the guards and entered the Capitol, interrupting the Congressional session.
The incident was accompanied by acts of vandalism and violence, which resulted in the deaths of five people and dozens of injuries. Police had difficulty controlling the crowd, and the National Guard was deployed to restore order in Washington. Later, several hundred participants in the assault were arrested, many of whom were charged with various crimes ranging from trespassing to assaulting police officers.
In July 2023, the US Department of Justice charged presidential candidate Donald Trump with three counts in the case of the Capitol storming.
