The best time to wake up for a morning workout can significantly affect your energy, productivity, and overall mood. Choosing the right time helps your body adapt to physical activity and boosts metabolism, according to Everyday Health.

Morning workouts

Exercising in the morning is beneficial because it lets you complete your daily fitness routine before the day gets busy, reducing the risk of skipping workouts in the evening.

To maximize the benefits, set your alarm one hour earlier than usual. Daily morning exercise kicks your metabolism into gear, increases heart rate, and can even help lower blood pressure.

However, your body still needs preparation. Wake up at least 10 minutes earlier than planned to give yourself time for light movement and warm-up exercises. Quick walks and dynamic stretches help muscles and joints get ready for more intense activity.

Nutrition and hydration

Before morning exercise, it’s important to eat. While some believe training on an empty stomach helps burn fat, a small snack is generally better. This may mean giving yourself an extra hour after waking before starting your workout.

Good pre-workout options include:

  • Toast with peanut butter and banana

  • Greek yogurt with berries

  • Apple slices with almond butter

Also, hydrate your body early. Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up.

How often to work out in the morning

Frequency depends on your goals, fitness level, and type of training:

  • For general health and fitness: 3–5 sessions per week, 20–45 minutes each. Alternate cardio (running, fast walking, jump rope) with strength exercises.

  • For muscle gain: 3–4 sessions per week to allow recovery.

  • For weight loss or endurance: 4–6 sessions per week, alternating intense and lighter days. Cardio or functional workouts can be done daily for 20–40 minutes.
