Russian President Vladimir Putin appears eager to bring the war against Ukraine to a swift end, while his demands are becoming less rigid as Russia faces mounting challenges, US President Donald Trump made the remarks during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
What Trump plans to tell Putin
During the conversation, Trump announced upcoming talks with the Russian President and asked what message he should pass along.
"Why won't you end this war? That's a good question. I have never asked this question," he said.
Trump stressed that he has spoken with Putin many times and is convinced that the Russian leader intends to halt the fighting.
According to Trump, Putin wants to bring the war to a swift end, although many people remain skeptical of that claim.
Zelenskyy-Trump meeting in Ankara
At the NATO summit in Ankara, US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where Trump made a new statement about a potential peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine. The US leader said work on a settlement document is ongoing but acknowledged that the process remains difficult.
During the talks, Trump asked his Ukrainian counterpart whether he would travel to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy responded with a sarcastic joke, saying that arranging a trip to Moscow would be difficult because of the constant flights overhead.
