What's wrong with peanuts and who should stay away from them: Doctor's insights
Peanuts are a healthy snack, rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats. However, peanuts are contraindicated for some people, writes Livestrong.
What problems eating peanuts may cause
US-based gastroenterologist Supriya Rao says that in general, digestive problems after eating a handful of peanuts are rare.
But in some people, eating large amounts of peanuts can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as gas, bloating, cramping, or constipation.
Peanuts are rich in fiber
While high-fiber foods have many health benefits, eating too much fiber at one time can cause gas and bloating, says Dr. Rao.
According to the USDA, the 2.4 grams of fiber in a serving of peanuts usually won't affect your gastrointestinal tract. A cup of peanuts contains 12 grams of fiber - almost half of what you need for the day. This is enough to cause unpleasant symptoms.
Some packaged types are high in sugar
Eating too much sugar at a time can also be bad for your stomach. Sugar can interact with gut bacteria and cause gas and bloating.
This is not a problem with plain or salted peanuts. But if you eat a large portion of honey-roasted peanuts or other sweetened varieties, you need to be aware of this.
You could be allergic
Peanuts are one of the most common food allergens. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, if you're allergic to peanuts, eating even a small amount can cause stomach cramps, vomiting, or diarrhea.
In most cases, digestive symptoms of an allergic reaction are usually combined with other problems, such as shortness of breath, cough, hives, sore throat, or swelling. In isolated cases, eating peanuts can also cause anaphylaxis in an allergic person, a life-threatening reaction that requires immediate medical attention.
