'West was overly optimistic about war in 2023' - Admiral Bauer
NATO's Military Committee Chairman Admiral Rob Bauer stated that the West was too optimistic about Russia's war against Ukraine in 2023, according the Financial Times.
According to him, the West was "overly optimistic about the war in 2023," believing that "if we give the Ukrainians the ammunition and training they need, they’ll win."
"We have to be careful not to be overly pessimistic in 2024. The sheer fact that Ukraine is still a sovereign state, and that the Ukrainians have taken back 50 per cent of what the Russians took in 2022 is remarkable," Bauer said.
Munich Security Conference 2024
From February 16 to 18, the annual Munich Security Conference took place. Over 150 world leaders gathered in Germany to discuss issues in global security. One of the key topics was financial aid to Ukraine.
During a panel discussion, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius did not rule out the possibility that within 5-8 years, Russia could attack one of the EU or NATO countries and called for preparation for the "worst-case scenario."
NATO's Military Committee Chairman, Admiral Rob Bauer, stated that the Alliance needs transformation, and the West must prepare for an era where anything can happen at any time, including the outbreak of war.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that wavering Western support for Kyiv and fears of escalation with Russia could prolong hostilities for years.
