Veterinarian on whether milk is good for cats
Many owners believe that cats should drink cow's milk, but this is not true. Cow's milk is not suitable for cats for several reasons, according to the Petmd.
Why milk is harmful to cats
Veterinarian Sandra Mitchell explained that as cats mature, they often lose the enzyme necessary for proper milk digestion.
Then lactose intolerance develops in them - a condition that also occurs in humans.
The doctor noted that if a cat experiences stomach upset after milk consumption, it is a typical sign of intolerance. Other symptoms may include vomiting, bloating, and abdominal pain.
It is important to note that not all cats have lactose intolerance.
However, the veterinarian still advises against giving cats milk. After all, cow's milk contains quite a bit of fat, and indoor cats are prone to obesity.
By allowing cats to drink milk regularly, you are simply adding fats and sugar to their diet.
Although, if your cat enjoys milk and does not have lactose intolerance, then a teaspoon of milk once or twice a week will not do any harm.
Can cats have plant-based milk alternatives
Oat, soy, almond, and coconut milk are also not suitable for cats.
Some of these milk products often contain sugar, oils, and thickeners that are difficult to digest.
The expert added that kittens have enzymes that help them digest their mother's milk. Once they are weaned from their mother's milk, their bodies gradually stop producing the enzymes necessary for its digestion.
It is important to understand that just because kittens feed on their mother's milk does not mean they can drink cow's, goat's, or sheep's milk.
The only approved "milk" for these fluffy babies, as recommended by veterinarians, is special artificial formulas developed for kittens.
According to the expert, cats just need to drink water. Access to clean water will prevent dehydration in the cat and keep them absolutely happy.
