The Vatican has announced the date of the conclave to elect a new pope. According to Reuters, it will begin on May 7.

Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church will begin a conclave to elect a new Pope on May 7, a senior Vatican source told Reuters today.

The decision was made during a closed meeting of the cardinals, which took place after the funeral of Pope Francis.

The official announcement of the date is expected soon.

About 135 cardinals under the age of 80 from around the world will take part in the vote. They will elect a new head of the Church, which unites more than 1.4 billion Catholics.

The previous two conclaves, held in 2005 and 2013, lasted only two days.

Pope's death

On the morning of April 21, it became known that Pope Francis had died.

In the evening, the Vatican announced the official cause of the pontiff's death. According to them, Francis suffered a stroke, as a result of which he fell into a coma and died.

Who will be the next Pope

After saying goodbye to Pope Francis, the Catholic Church will prepare for the election of a new pontiff. Among the likely candidates for the throne is Ukrainian Mykola Bychok, who currently heads the UGCC diocese in Melbourne and is considered the youngest cardinal in the Vatican.
