US Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei at President Donald Trump's direction to restart peace talks, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Sources told the outlet that the initiative aims to prevent a possible new US attack on Iran after next week's midterm elections.
The WSJ reports that discussions focused on the negotiation framework rather than a specific peace proposal.
Washington demanded nuclear concessions, while Tehran sought immediate economic relief.
Media reports have previously suggested that Donald Trump could launch a new phase of the war against Iran in the near future. This could happen either before or after the US midterm congressional elections.
In addition, according to US intelligence, Iran may be preparing assassination attempts against American officials. Amid this, Washington has quietly begun evacuating some diplomatic personnel from countries across the Middle East.
The media also reported that US military spending on the war against Iran has already exceeded $47 billion. This is more than 25% above the amount the US Department of War projected in July.
