During Eurovision performances, some contestants try so hard to stand out that their acts remain in the memory of millions of viewers for years.

RBC-Ukraine has collected the boldest and most unusual stage performances from the song contest that raised more questions than answers.

Let 3 – “Mama ŠČ!”

The band’s performance rightfully earned a place among the strangest. The artists, who represented Croatia in 2023, took the stage in unusual costumes resembling military uniforms. The number featured bold dancing, a chaotic and unclear staging, and shouting.

Let 3 directly mocked politics and the seriousness of military themes through grotesque and intentionally strange presentation. However, not everyone understood it.

Lordi – “Hard Rock Hallelujah”

The performance by Lordi (Finland) at the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 shocked fans of standard contest songs.

The band members appeared on stage in frightening monster costumes with masks, horns, and heavy makeup. They looked less like singers competing in a music contest and more like characters from a horror film.

The heavy rock sound and aggressive staging surprised Eurovision fans, but it was not a mistake. The bold performance brought both criticism and high scores.

The act became a triumph, and Lordi secured Finland’s first-ever victory in the history of the competition.

Donatan & Cleo – “My Słowianie”

Another performance that shocked viewers with its bold staging took place at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014.

The act by Donatan and Cleo sparked a lot of discussion, as the Polish performers appeared on stage in traditional Slavic costumes, while the performance included very provocative choreography and controversial movements.

Particularly memorable for viewers were scenes of butter churning and laundry washing, which many interpreted as a deliberate satire of stereotypes about women.

Dustin the Turkey – “Irelande Douze Pointe”

The Irish entry is still considered one of the strangest acts in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest 2008.

Dustin the Turkey represented Ireland with a humorous song performed by a puppet turkey.

For many viewers, the appearance of a television comedy character in a serious international music contest was completely confusing, and the performance was widely described at the time as absurd.

Despite the attention it received, Dustin the Turkey did not qualify for the final.

DJ BoBo – “Vampires Are Alive”

The Swiss singer’s performance with the song “Vampires Are Alive” turned the stage of the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 into a true “vampire ball,” featuring dark makeup and eerie stage design.

For many viewers, the number felt overly chaotic and was more reminiscent of Halloween than a typical performance at a music contest.

That year, as expected, the country did not win the competition.

Scooch – “Flying the Flag”

During their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, the group Scooch became known for one of the most unusual and comedic performances of the year.

The performers appeared as flight attendants and turned the stage into a parody of an airline flight, featuring humorous choreography and playful staging.

Viewers interpreted the performance as having a double meaning, which is why the act was often described as provocative.

In the end, the United Kingdom, represented by the flight attendants, finished only in 22nd place in the final.
