The United States has softened its conditions for aid to Ukraine. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that a minerals deal could be finalized this week, Bloomberg reports.

The US has lowered its estimate of aid provided to Ukraine and eased its demands in ongoing negotiations over an economic agreement.

Bessent stated that both sides are "very close" to a final decision. He said Kyiv presented a new counterproposal over the weekend, and the parties are nearing a compromise.

"We are very, very close," Bessent told Bloomberg during his visit to Buenos Aires.

He noted that a minerals deal could be signed as early as this week.

While the US described recent technical talks as productive, officials have not confirmed the size of the fund involved, and have postponed discussions on future US investment, which is Ukraine's key interest in the agreement.

Recently, Bessent accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of derailing a potential minerals deal, claiming Zelenskyy promised three times to sign the agreement but ultimately did not.
