The United States threatened Russia with sanctions if it did not move toward peace with Ukraine. Such a warning was sent to Moscow during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday, reports The Guardian.

The UN Security Council meeting was convened after a massive attack on Kyiv that killed more than 20 people. US Mission Counselor John Kelley said at the meeting that such strikes “cast doubt on the seriousness of Russia’s desire for peace,” and demanded that Russia stop them.

Kelley also said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin must meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He also repeated US President Donald Trump’s warning that sanctions could be imposed on Russia if the war continues.

After the talks in Alaska, Trump stated that he would like Putin to meet with Zelenskyy within “two or three” weeks. However, the Russian side stubbornly ignores this call, constantly inventing excuses to avoid the meeting.

As Zelenskyy said, the deadline set by Trump expires on Monday, September 1. And Ukraine, according to the president, will remind everyone about it.

In the opinion of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Putin is afraid of meeting with Zelenskyy, which is why the Kremlin is delaying it.
