The US launched a new wave of strikes against Iran on the morning of July 15, according to US Central Command.

Details

At 6 a.m. ET today, US Central Command (CENTCOM) launched a new wave of strikes against Iran.

According to a military statement, the attacks are intended to further weaken the military capabilities that Iranian forces use to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM has not yet specified the number of targets or their exact locations.

Background

On July 13, a senior Yemeni official warned that Houthi forces were prepared to block the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

Tehran views an alliance with the Houthis as a way to replicate the scenario in the Strait of Hormuz and increase pressure on Washington.

Meanwhile, amid a new wave of attacks, oil prices have risen again—Brent crude futures climbed to $85.72 per barrel.

Analysts warn that further escalation of the conflict could push oil prices to $100 per barrel.
