US set to approve $680 million arms sale to Israel – Reuters
The administration of current US President Joe Biden is seeking to approve the sale of a $680 million arms package to Israel amid a ceasefire in Lebanon, Reuters reports.
According to an American official, the weapons package for Israel includes thousands of JDAM precision-guided bomb kits and hundreds of small-diameter bombs.
The package has been in preparation for several months and was reviewed by Congress during September and October.
It is noted that the sale of the equipment was made possible by a $20 billion package approved by the US in August, which also included fighter jets.
A State Department representative declined to confirm the sale to Reuters but stated that US security support for Israel remains unwavering, while also emphasizing that "Israel had a moral obligation to protect civilians."
Earlier this month, it was reported that the US Senate plans to vote for a bill that would block certain weapons sales to Israel.
The bill was supported by lawmakers who argue that Israel is obstructing humanitarian aid urgently needed by Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.
