The agreement between Ukraine and the United States on mineral resources sends a "strong signal" to the Kremlin and is expected to strengthen positions in peace talks with Russia, said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Sky News reports.

According to Bessent, the agreement will show the "Russian leadership that there is no daylight between the Ukrainian people and the American people, between our goals".

He added that the agreement is mutually beneficial for both countries, allowing US businesses to make money if the Ukrainian economy grows.

"This is a total economic partnership. This isn't just rare earth, it's infrastructure, it's energy. So there's the opportunity here for both sides to really win," Bessent said.

The US Treasury Secretary called the agreement between Ukraine and the US a "signal" to Russia.

"I think this is a strong signal to the Russian leadership, and it gives President Trump the ability to now negotiate with Russia on even a stronger basis," he said.

Agreement between Ukraine and the US

Ukraine and the United States have signed a major economic partnership agreement granting the US access to Ukrainian natural resources and establishing a reconstruction investment fund.

Prior to that, Ukraine and the US signed a memorandum, which was the first step to the partnership.

According to the agreement, it covers 57 types of minerals, including critical and strategically important ones.
