US reveals declassified information on nuclear weapons reserves
The United States has published newly declassified information on the US nuclear weapons stockpile. This information will update the data released in October 2021.
Nuclear weapons stockpile
As of September 2023, the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile consisted of 3,748 warheads.
This number represents an 88 percent reduction from the stockpile peak of 31,255 at the end of fiscal year 1967 and an 83 percent reduction from the level of 22,217 at the fall of the Berlin Wall in late 1989.

Dismantling of nuclear warheads
From FY 1994 to FY 2023, the United States dismantled 12,088 nuclear warheads.
Since September 30, 2020, the United States has dismantled 405 nuclear warheads. Approximately 2,000 additional nuclear warheads are currently decommissioned and awaiting dismantlement.
Non-strategic nuclear weapons
Since September 30, 1991, the number of non-strategic nuclear weapons in the United States has been reduced by more than 90 percent.
This year the United States and China resumed nuclear weapons talks for the first time in five years.
