US prepares final vote on sweeping new sanctions against Russia

The US House of Representatives has taken another step toward considering a bill on new sanctions against Russia and Iran. A final vote on the bill could take place as early as September 16, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty correspondent in Washington, Alex Raufoglu.
The House Rules Committee approved the procedure for considering the bill on September 14 by a vote of seven to three.
What happens next
Procedural debate is expected to begin on September 15. A vote on the rules for considering the bill is expected at around 8:30 p.m. Kyiv time. If approved, a final vote on the bill could take place as early as September 16.
What the bill provides
The bill would allow the US president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India.
In addition, the bill provides for sanctions against Russian oligarchs, officials, military personnel and members of their families, financial institutions, energy projects, as well as vessels linked to the shadow fleet.
What the Senate decided
The US Senate approved the bill. In August, the bill received 86 votes in favor and 11 against. If the House of Representatives also approves the initiative, it could be sent to US President Donald Trump for his signature.
The US imposed new sanctions on Russian bank VTB as part of its pressure on Iran. The US Treasury Department accused the financial institution of helping circumvent restrictions against Tehran.
The department said it would continue to identify companies and entities that provide the Iranian regime with financial, technological, or other material support.
