The United States has launched another wave of large-scale airstrikes against targets in Iran. President Donald Trump ordered the destruction of Tehran’s military capabilities following a deadly attack on a US base in Jordan, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM).

The bombing campaign began on July 19 at 6 p.m. Eastern Time. This marks the eighth consecutive night of US airstrikes against targets inside Iran.

The primary target is the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The units were responsible for attacking US troops in Jordan the previous night.

Beyond retaliation, Washington has a strategic objective. The United States wants to clear the way for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has repeatedly threatened maritime traffic, and Washington now aims to strip Tehran of its ability to disrupt shipping.

Trump ordered strikes aimed at weakening Tehran’s ability to block maritime routes. The airstrikes are targeting military infrastructure and weapons depots.

US military casualties in Iran

The military operation has been underway since February, with the number of US casualties continuing to rise:

  • On July 17, two US service members were killed in Jordan.
  • Another soldier remains missing.
  • The total number of US military personnel killed since the start of the war has reached 16.
  • A total of 420 service members have been wounded during the operation.

Background
