The US has launched a large-scale military operation against Islamic State fighters in Syria in response to the killing of two American soldiers and a translator in central Syria, according to a post by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and a statement from US Central Command.
“Earlier today, U.S. forces commenced OPERATION HAWKEYE STRIKE in Syria to eliminate ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites,” Hegseth wrote.
He noted that the operation is a direct response to the attack on American forces that took place on December 13 in the Palmyra area.
In his statement, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth emphasized that the operation does not mark the start of a war, but is an act of retribution.
“This is not the beginning of a war — it is a declaration of vengeance. The United States of America, under President Trump’s leadership, will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people,” he said.
Hegseth stressed that Washington will respond forcefully to any attack on American citizens anywhere in the world.
“As we said directly following the savage attack, if you target Americans — anywhere in the world — you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you,” the Defense Secretary wrote.
The US military reported that a significant number of ISIS fighters were eliminated during the operation in Syria. The Department of Defense emphasized that strikes will continue.
US Central Command also confirmed the strike against ISIS fighters in Syria.
“U.S. forces have commenced a large-scale strike against ISIS infrastructure and weapons sites in Syria. This massive strike follows the attack on U.S. and partner forces in Syria on Dec. 13,” the statement read.
On December 13, an ISIS militant ambushed and killed two American soldiers and one civilian translator in Syria. At the time, US President Donald Trump promised a strong retaliatory strike.
Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa condemned the killings and expressed his condolences over the tragedy.
