On April 16, the UN General Assembly backed a draft resolution that referenced Russian aggression against Ukraine. However, the United States, along with Russia and Belarus, voted against it, according to Reform.news.

The UN General Assembly considered the resolution Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and other organizations: cooperation between the United Nations and the Council of Europe.

The document mentioned Russian aggression against Ukraine several times. It stated that Europe is facing unprecedented challenges "following the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, and against Georgia prior to that." The resolution also included references to ongoing work on establishing a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

During the vote, US representatives objected, claiming the language in the resolution does not contribute to progress toward peace. Russian diplomats called the wording unacceptable.

In total, only nine countries voted against the resolution:

  • United States

  • Russia

  • Belarus

  • North Korea

  • Eritrea

  • Mali

  • Nicaragua

  • Niger

  • Sudan

This is not the first time the US has voted with Russia

In February, the United States voted against Ukraine's resolution condemning Russian aggression. The document was also opposed by Russia and Belarus.

Washington even proposed an alternative resolution that called the war a conflict. At the same time, American diplomats asked that the Ukrainian resolution be removed from consideration.
