The United States has deployed F-22 Raptor fighters to the Middle East. Their aim is to bolster Israel's defense and prevent potential regional escalation originating from Iran, according to the US Air Force.

According to US Central Command, the F-22 fighters have already arrived in the Middle East. However, the number of aircraft deployed and their exact location in the region have not been disclosed.

This deployment of F-22s is the first in the Middle East since June 2023. Earlier this year, an F-22 shot down a Chinese air balloon off the coast of South Carolina, which the US claimed was used for high-altitude surveillance.

The relocation of F-22s comes amid concerns that Iran may attack Israel at any moment in retaliation for the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

Background

Recently, the leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was eliminated in Iran. Following this, the Iranian authorities accused Israel of the act, though Tel Aviv has not confirmed this. Detailed information on Haniyeh's elimination can be found in the material by RBC-Ukraine.

Iran has also stated that Haniyeh's killing was carried out using a short-range missile.

Later, The Telegraph reported that the residence of the Hamas leader was mined by Iranian operatives recruited by Mossad. Iran has threatened to retaliate against Haniyeh’s killing.

Moreover, over 20 individuals have been arrested in Iran in connection with the killing of the Hamas leader.
