US considers restricting exports of AI chips to some countries - Bloomberg
Officials from the administration of US President Joe Biden discussed restricting the sale of advanced artificial intelligence chips by Nvidia Corp. and other American companies to certain countries, according to Bloomberg.
According to sources, the new approach would cap export licenses for specific nations in the interest of national security. Officials are focused on Gulf nations, where the demand for AI data centers is growing.
The sources said that the discussions are in the early stages and remain uncertain, noting that the idea has gained traction in recent weeks. The policy would be based on a new framework to simplify the licensing process for supplying AI chips to data centers like the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
It is worth noting that US authorities do not accuse American companies, whose products Russia uses in missile production, of violating export controls. Their components continue to reach Russia through intermediaries.
Yesterday, on October 14, EU High Representative Josep Borrell stated that Western countries, including EU nations, must increase oversight of companies' export activities that produce sensitive electronic components that Russians use in weapons production.
