Republican leaders in the US House of Representatives abruptly canceled a vote on limiting President Donald Trump’s military campaign against Iran. The reason was the risk that the measure would pass, according to Bloomberg and Axios.

According to media reports, the vote could have been the first successful congressional condemnation of Trump’s military actions against Iran, following numerous failed attempts by Democrats to pass such a resolution.

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers explained that Republican leaders canceled the vote because too many lawmakers from their party were absent.

In other words, the absence of a sufficient number of Republican representatives would have allowed this bill to pass.

"We've gone from losing by one to tying last week to this chicken s*** retreat they did tonight," says Democratic Congressman Jared Huffman.

Now Republicans plan to bring this issue up for consideration after the House returns from its week-long Memorial Day recess.

At the same time, Axios notes that the vote is largely symbolic. The reason is that Trump can veto this bill.

It is important to note that the Republican Party has largely supported Trump’s military campaign, but concerns within the party have intensified as the conflict has dragged on without congressional approval.

Many Republicans point out that the 60-day deadline under the War Powers Act, which requires the withdrawal of US troops if there is no congressional authorization for their use, has already passed.

However, the White House maintains that this demand is no longer in effect, as a ceasefire has been reached between the US and Iran.

Peace agreement with Iran

As reported by CNN, US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have disagreed over a potential war against Iran.

Specifically, the US was set to resume bombing Iran this week, but Trump soon announced the suspension of strikes at the request of allies in the Persian Gulf. He hopes to reach an agreement through negotiations. Meanwhile, Netanyahu is skeptical of this idea and considers postponing the attack a mistake.

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei had approved a directive. It states that stocks of enriched uranium close to weapons-grade levels must not be exported outside the country.
