The administration of US President Donald Trump has launched a process that will allow some sanctioned tankers to return to legal oil transportation, reports Bloomberg.
Washington insists that it is not lifting sanctions on vessels that previously transported oil from Russia and Iran, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said.
He added that investors are proposing to buy tankers that have been idled due to sanctions, repair them, and use them to transport oil that is not subject to restrictions.
He spoke about this on Monday during a Citadel Securities event in New York.
“We’re going to move some of the ships from what I call the ‘bad-guy fleet’ to the ‘good-guy fleet'. They will not carry sanctioned oil anymore,” Wright explained.
According to the secretary, the Trump administration is developing an approval mechanism that will allow such vessels to be used legally. He emphasized that this does not mean lifting restrictions on tankers that transported Russian or Iranian oil, but rather changing their status.
“We are converting dark tankers to legitimate tankers. There is no removing of sanctions,” the secretary stressed.
