On Monday, February 19, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, announced her intention to seek a second term, with the former German minister having all the potential to do so, citing France 24.

"I am taking a very conscious and well-considered decision. I would like to run for a second term in office," she said at a press conference.

Von der Leyen received support from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the conservative party of Germany, of which she is a member.

Election of the President of the European Commission

The president is elected for a five-year term in June. The elected head of the European Commission takes office five months after the European Parliament elections.

Traditionally, the position of president of the European Commission goes to the so-called lead candidate from the party that receives the most votes in the European elections.

Currently, the European People's Party, which includes the CDU, is leading in the polls, so there is a significant chance that von der Leyen will remain the President of the European Commission.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz opposed the idea of von der Leyen being appointed as the next NATO Secretary General.

Bild reported that Ursula von der Leyen would announce her readiness to serve a second term as President of the European Commission.
