In Primorsky Krai (Russian Federation), a fire broke out on the multifunctional supply vessel Katerina Velikaya, project IBSV 10022 AH. This ship was launched from the shipyard only three years ago and was considered a pride of the Russian Federation, according to the Russian Far East Transport Prosecutor's Office.

The department stated that the fire on the ship at the Dalzavod Ship Repair Center occurred overnight and was extinguished.

It was reported that as a result of the incident, one person died, and three others were taken to the hospital.

"Currently, law enforcement agencies are conducting checks aimed at establishing the circumstances of the incident," the Russian prosecutor's office added.

What is known about the ship

According to open sources, the multifunctional supply vessel Katerina Velikaya, of Icebreaker 7 ice class, was considered the flagship in a series of four ships for the oil company Rosneft.

The vessel was being constructed at the Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex and was designed for:

  • unlimited navigation area
  • transportation of cargo to offshore facilities
  • icebreaking operations
  • ice situation control
  • rescue operations
  • firefighting
  • escorting
  • oil spill response
  • towing of self-elevating platforms and other large objects
  • container transportation

The home port of this vessel is Murmansk. Katerina Velikaya was launched in December 2020 with great pomp and ceremony, in the presence of the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
