As a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 10,500 people died, and almost 20,000 were injured, according to the data from the UN report.

Total number of victims

The organization noted that at least 10,582 civilians have died in Ukraine since February 24, 2022.

Also, at least 19,875 were injured. The UN stated that the total civilian casualties were 30,457. This number includes 587 dead and 1298 injured children.

"Of the adults, men were disproportionally affected, accounting for 60 percent of the casualties," the organization added.

Thousands of civilians died shortly after beginning of war

The UN clarified that the number of civilian casualties was particularly high in the first few months after the Russian attack. Thousands of civilians were killed and wounded every month.

"While the numbers gradually decreased over the course of 2022 and 2023, they remained high, with an average of 163 civilians killed and 547 injured per month in 2023," the organization added.

War crimes of Russians in Ukraine

Last December, the use of Ukrainian prisoners of war as 'human shields' on the line of contact in the Zaporizhzhia region was recorded on video. Footage of the Russians leading captured, unarmed soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine under the muzzles of machine guns toward Ukrainian positions, and covering themselves with them, circulated in the media.

Apart from that, on March 6, the network was shaken by a video published by the Russian occupiers. The invaders filmed how they shot a Ukrainian prisoner of war after his words "Glory to Ukraine".

Ukraine handed over to the representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations a verified video recording of the use of Ukrainian prisoners of war as "human shields" on the line of contact. However, international institutions ignored the information.
