The head of the EU Military Committee, General Robert Brieger declares that a UN mission composed of soldiers from various countries could observe the ceasefire in Ukraine. It could include not only soldiers from the EU.

"A possible mission under a UN mandate could include not only Europeans but also soldiers from the Global South or, for example, the Caucasus. EU soldiers would undoubtedly be able to make a significant contribution," the general said.

In addition, according to him, EU countries could provide significant forces to monitor the ceasefire. However, he believes monitoring the demilitarized zone along the front line would require a military presence "in the high five-digit range."

"This means that they would also have the right to enforce the ceasefire with weapons and air support," he added, noting that "at present, all of this sounds very theoretical," but "such a scenario could be implemented."

The general also considers the plan proposed by US President Donald Trump to quickly end the war in Ukraine as "unlikely."

"Simply put, this (Trump's plan - ed.) would have the advantage of ending deaths. However, the disadvantage would be that the conflict would continue and, in the worst-case scenario, could last for decades, for example, like the situation between North and South Korea," Brieger stated.

Ukraine’s conditions for a ceasefire

Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would agree to a ceasefire under two conditions. According to him, Ukraine needs real security guarantees.

In particular, NATO could serve as a security guarantee for Ukraine as a swift step. Another component, according to the president, must be arms supplies before the ceasefire.
