UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the end of the dictatorial regime in Syria. He urged the country to focus on recovery after the sudden fall of President Bashar al-Assad, states The Guardian.

“After 14 years of brutal war and the fall of the dictatorial regime, today the people of Syria can seize a historic opportunity to build a stable and peaceful future,” Guterres said in a statement.

He called on the people of Syria to remain calm and avoid violence.

“I reiterate my call for calm and avoiding violence at this sensitive time, while protecting the rights of all Syrians, without distinction,” the Secretary-General emphasized.

Today, on December 8, the regime of Bashar al-Assad, who had ruled the country for more than 25 years, was overthrown in Syria. In the morning, Syrian rebels entered Damascus and seized state media and government buildings.
