The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for a lasting peace in Ukraine, with the United States abstaining from the vote, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on Twitter (X) and a comment from MFA spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi.

"I welcome today's adoption of the UN GA resolution Support for lasting peace in Ukraine initiated by Ukraine. At defining moments, the international community must be clear. Today, it is," Sybiha wrote.

According to him, this is not just another vote but a confirmation that Ukraine is not alone and that the principles of the UN Charter still matter.

Overall, 107 countries supported the resolution. Sybiha noted that Ukraine will continue to act — decisively and consistently — to achieve a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

What Tykhyi said

As the spokesperson for Ukraine’s MFA noted, it was no surprise that the United States abstained from the vote.

"What was truly surprising — and pleasantly so — was the number of votes on the board," Tykhyi said.

He added that the five days leading up to the vote involved intense work by Ukraine’s entire diplomatic system — from Ukraine’s permanent mission to the UN and all its foreign diplomatic posts to Minister Sybiha personally lobbying countries to support the resolution.

Tykhyi also noted that Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa traveled to New York to help secure votes.

"We were really aiming for 90+ votes to achieve a respectable result compared to last year. But we ended up with 107. That’s an excellent outcome and truly another victory for Ukrainian diplomacy within international organizations," Tykhyi emphasized.

US voting controversy

On February 24, 2025, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution Facilitating a Comprehensive, Just, and Lasting Peace in Ukraine, proposed by Ukraine and co-sponsored by over 50 countries.

The resolution received 93 votes in favor and demands that Russia immediately and unconditionally withdraw all its troops from Ukrainian territory.

Eighteen countries voted against the Ukrainian draft, with the United States unexpectedly among them.
