Ukrainian military personnel have begun using new elements of combat clothing that Germany is introducing as part of its large-scale army modernization. This refers to combat trousers and shirts manufactured by Hexonia, which are part of the Bundeswehr's new modular equipment system, according to the Militarnyi portal.

All elements of the gear are part of the Kampfbekleidungssatz Streitkräfte (KBS SK) — the new modular combat clothing system of the German army. It is designed on a multi-layered principle, allowing soldiers to adapt their equipment depending on the weather, season, and mission requirements.

The kit includes combat trousers, a combat shirt, a field jacket, insulating and waterproof layers, thermal underwear, gloves, and other equipment items.

The main feature of KBS SK is modularity. Even with additional insulating or protective layers, the soldier retains access to the equipment mounted on the body armor or the belt system.

The new gear is part of the Bundeswehr's broader modernization program, which covers not only clothing but also personal protective equipment. The system comprises more than 100 items in total — from field knives and clothing to body armor, helmets, and backpack systems.

In parallel, Germany is upgrading the ballistic protection of its military personnel as part of the MOBAST (Modulare ballistische Schutz- und Trageausstattung) system. It provides for a modular body armor with the option of attaching additional protection for the neck, shoulders, groin, and thighs, depending on the mission.

Additionally, the Bundeswehr is receiving new combat helmets that allow for the installation of night vision devices, modern communication systems, and active hearing protectors.

Ukrainian military personnel already using the new uniform have given positive feedback on its quality and comfort.

"I am satisfied with the uniform. It is high-quality, comfortable, and wears well," one serviceman told Militarnyi.

At the same time, he noted that not all elements of the German equipment are rated equally by the troops. According to him, the Bundeswehr's body armor has not been a primary component of the aid received by Ukrainian units — rather, the clothing items and other gear have seen the most use.

Context

NATO countries continue to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This year, Alliance nations will provide Ukraine with €70 billion in military equipment, aid, and training in 2026, with at least the same amount planned for 2027.

Additionally, the UK is developing cheaper domestically produced long-range missiles for Ukraine that will not rely on American components and could reach the front within a year.
