Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina finished her run at the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, losing to American Peyton Stearns in the quarterfinals.

Svitolina - Stearns: How the match ended

The match lasted over 2.5 hours. In the first set, Elina unexpectedly lost 6-2. In the second set, the Ukrainian gathered all her strength and won 4-6. In the third set, Svitolina faced significant resistance from the American, and ultimately, Peyton Stearns triumphed 7-6.

In the third set, the American was forced to take a medical timeout due to a problem with her leg.

Before this match, Svitolina had been showing confident play in the Italian capital and was considered by experts and bookmakers as one of the main contenders not only for victory in this match but also for the main title at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

In the semifinals, Stearns will face Italy's Jasmine Paolini, who defeated the representative of the terrorist country, Diana Schneider.

It should be noted that Svitolina earned 125,000 euros in prize money from this match and maintained positive momentum in her preparation for the French Open (Roland Garros), which begins on May 25.

This quarterfinal marked Elina Svitolina's third at WTA 1000 tournaments in 2025. The last time she reached the semifinals was in Madrid, where she showed excellent play on clay courts.

Svitolina's most recent WTA title came in 2023, and she won in Rome in 2017 and 2018. The tournament in Italy remains one of the most successful in her entire career.

Svitolina's shot was recognized as the best by the WTA last month.
