Ukrainian national team midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi has become a co-author of a unique record in Italy’s Serie A. Thanks to his contribution in the match against Milan, he caught up with Andriy Shevchenko in key statistics.

Triumphant return: Malinovskyi conquers Serie A

In the 19th-round Serie A match between Genoa and Milan, Ukrainian midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi once again showcased his skill.

Starting for the Griffins, the 32-year-old player provided an assist in the 28th minute.

His precise cross helped Lorenzo Colombo open the scoring in the match.

In addition to the assist, the Ukrainian played 64 minutes on the pitch, demonstrating impressive passing accuracy of 94%.

Despite the leader’s active performance, Genoa could not secure the win: the match ended 1-1 after a late goal from Rafael Leão and a missed penalty by a Genoa player near the end.

On par with Sheva: historic stats for Ukrainians

This assist was Malinovskyi’s 29th in the Italian league. With this, Ruslan officially equaled the legendary Andriy Shevchenko, who had long held the record as the top Ukrainian assist provider in Serie A.

According to analytics sources, Ukrainian players’ assists in Italy’s top league are distributed as follows:

  • Andriy Shevchenko – 29 (all for Milan)

  • Ruslan Malinovskyi – 29 (24 for Atalanta and 5 for Genoa)

  • Oleksandr Zavarov – 7 (Juventus)

  • Viktor Kovalenko – 6 (Spezia, Empoli)

Now, Malinovskyi needs just one more assist to become the absolute record-holder among Ukrainian players in the history of Italian top-flight football.

Genoa’s current standing and the midfielder’s plans

For Ruslan, this was his first contribution of 2026. Overall this season, the midfielder has two goals and two assists to his name.

Despite his consistent performances, his team is in a difficult league position.

Currently, Genoa sits 17th in the table with 16 points.

Malinovskyi will have the next opportunity to lead the historic ranking on January 12, when Genoa faces Cagliari.

The player’s contract with the Italian club runs until summer 2027.
