Ukrainian Navy strengthening: Zelenskyy names Turkish-built corvette for Ukraine
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has named the new corvette manufactured by Türkiye for Ukraine, according to the Office of the President of Ukraine's page.
According to order No. 150/2024, Zelenskyy decided to name the corvette of the Ada class of the Ukrainian Navy after Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi.
It will henceforth be referred to as the Corvette Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi. This was done to restore the historical traditions of the national military, and perpetuate the memory of the outstanding Ukrainian military, political, and state figure, Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host Ivan Vyhovskyi.
Strengthening the fleet
The President, while in Türkiye, stated that he signed this decree yesterday. He added that the corvette would definitely appear in Ukrainian territorial waters.
"I am confident that it will also strengthen our Navy," he said.
What is known about the other corvette
The corvette Hetman Ivan Mazepa of the Ada class will be adapted to all existing types of anti-ship missiles. Work on creating the new Ukrainian corvette began in January 2021, steel was cut, and sections were formed.
It is worth reminding that in early July 2021, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine would receive its own military corvette by the end of 2023. It is planned that the ship will be accepted into the Ukrainian Navy in 2024.
In September 2021, the laying of a ship of the Ada type for the Ukrainian Navy took place in Türkiye. At that time, 13 sections and the keel of the ship had already been formed.
The spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk, has stated that Ukrainian soldiers are already undergoing training for further service on the corvette Hetman Ivan Mazepa, which is currently being built in Türkiye.
