Ukraine has managed to reduce losses among its military personnel in 2025. Casualties fell by 13%, according to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi.
“Throughout 2025, we managed to reduce our personnel losses by 13%,” he said.
According to Syrskyi, the past year proved Ukraine’s ability to systematically wear down the enemy and significantly reduce its potential.
“The Defense Forces prevented the aggressor from carrying out its plans, preserved strategic positions, and laid the groundwork for further actions,” the Commander-in-Chief emphasized.
Ukraine’s losses in the war
Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, has now lasted more than 1,418 days.
In February 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion, disclosed data on fallen Ukrainian soldiers. At that time, he cited a figure of 31,000 killed.
At the same time, the president refused to disclose how many Ukrainian servicemembers were wounded or missing in action.
Zelenskyy also said that the decision not to disclose detailed casualty figures was made jointly with the military.
In February 2025, in an interview with NBC News, the head of state said that Ukraine had lost more than 46,000 soldiers in the war with Russia, with tens of thousands considered missing and 380,000 wounded.
“We have fixed the number of losses. We have 46-plus, yeah, 46,000 killed soldiers. Tens of thousands more, tens of thousands more, those who are missing in action or are in captivity,” he said.
