Russia's terror in the Black Sea could trigger a global food price shock. Certain groups of people will be hit hardest, stated acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha on X.

Sybiha warns of consequences of Russian attacks

Russian attacks could cause a surge in food prices, hitting the most vulnerable populations first, Sybiha said.

"Russia’s escalating terror against civilian cargo vessels in the Black Sea carries a serious risk to global food security. If Moscow does not stop its strikes, the resulting shock to food prices will hit the most vulnerable," the acting minister said.

Consumers most at risk include:

  • Africa,
  • Asia,
  • the Middle East,
  • Latin America.

Ukraine calls for global solidarity

Sybiha called for global solidarity and urged countries in these regions to demand that Russian President Vladimir Putin immediately end attacks on freedom of navigation in the Black Sea.

"Russia is doing to the Black Sea and food security what Iran has done to the Strait of Hormuz and energy security," the acting minister said.

He also urged the international community not to stay silent but to act now to stop Russian terror that turns food into a weapon and uses hunger as an instrument of war.

As previously reported, on the night of July 24, the commercial vessel Christiana B was damaged while sailing through Romania's exclusive economic zone on its way from the United States to Ukraine.

Sybiha said Russia is trying to turn the Black Sea into a zone of fear and instability by deliberately targeting civilian commercial vessels.

Ukraine's maritime exports have virtually stopped due to Russian attacks on port infrastructure and foreign commercial ships.
