Ukraine war gives North Korea new advantage, UN Command general says

Participation in the Russia-Ukraine war has given North Korean troops modern combat experience and an opportunity to test their missile systems, changing the security calculus on the Korean Peninsula, said Lieutenant General Scott Winter, Deputy Commander of the United Nations Command (UNC), according to NK News.
Lessons of the war and new threats
According to the Australian general, Pyongyang’s alliance with Moscow has allowed North Korean troops to gain firsthand experience with the technologies and tactics of modern warfare.
Winter emphasized that the relationship between North Korea and Russia, along with North Korea’s involvement in the war in Ukraine, serves as a timely reminder that security threats are global in nature.
He emphasized that North Korea used the conflict as an opportunity to test several of its ballistic missile systems and gained combat experience.
The experience gained by Pyongyang will be taken into account during the annual US-South Korean Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) military exercises, which begin on Monday.
The drills will involve 70 military personnel from 11 UNC member states. This year’s exercises will include scenarios involving countering GPS jamming, cyberattacks and drone operations.
Several days before the drills, North Korea launched ballistic missiles again. The UNC condemned the provocations.
Drone flights and ceasefire violations
One of the UNC’s tasks is to monitor compliance with the ceasefire. However, the command has still not released the results of an investigation into Seoul’s allegations that military drones were sent to Pyongyang in October 2024.
Winter declined to confirm whether the investigation, which has been ongoing for nearly two years, has been completed. He explained that such cases are complex and that not all reports are made public.
What does the United Nations Command do?
The United Nations Command (UNC) is a US-led multinational organization responsible for overseeing and enforcing the armistice on the Korean Peninsula that was established after the 1950-1953 Korean War.
Its main tasks include monitoring and investigating incidents, de-escalation and communication, and the defense of South Korea.
Russia-North Korea military cooperation
Military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang has intensified significantly and reached a new level since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
North Korea not only regularly supplies Russian forces with ammunition but also provides new batches of missiles and sends its own troops.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia had received a new shipment of ballistic missiles from North Korea.
According to him, such cooperation creates additional risks for the entire world, as the experience gained in the war allows Pyongyang to significantly improve its own missile capabilities.
In addition, according to Ukrainian intelligence, Russia intends to deploy up to 50,000 North Korean soldiers. Carrying out missions on Russian territory and directly participating in combat allow North Korean troops to learn the tactics and technologies of modern warfare.
