Ukraine to receive 2,000 Humvee off-road vehicles from the US
The United States will transfer 2,000 Humvee off-road vehicles to Ukraine as part of one of its aid packages. The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) already have experience using them in the war, reports Forbes.
This number of Humvee vehicles is a very large shipment of such equipment. They will help fill gaps in Ukraine's positions on the front line, allowing the AFU to advance more effectively toward Russian positions.
These off-road vehicles resemble civilian cars, which simplifies the need for extensive training before sending them to the front lines.
Forbes reports that Humvees fit well into Ukraine's current defense strategy, as they can be used in urban environments where tanks and artillery are less effective than more compact and maneuverable off-road vehicles.
Ukrainian forces can also use Humvees to transport heavy weaponry or mount machine guns and other weapons. Some Ukrainian units have already transformed them into mobile servicing platforms, enabling repairs of armored vehicles on the move in field conditions.
Ukrainian forces have also used Humvees as mobile air defense platforms by mounting anti-aircraft guns and drone countermeasures.
US assistance to Ukraine
On October 16, US President Joe Biden announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth $425 million, which includes the shipment of Humvee off-road vehicles.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the United States would provide Ukraine with a number of military aid packages between October and December, with a total value ranging from $500 million to $750 million.
