Ukraine's Defense Minister discusses frontline and US aid with Pentagon chief
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umeerov had a call with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, during which they discussed the situation on the frontlines and continued US support, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reports.
During the conversation, Umerov updated Austin on the frontline situation, including the fighting dynamics, challenges, and the needs of Ukrainian soldiers.
The two ministers also discussed further military aid from the US, which continues to provide critical resources to Ukraine in its fight against the enemy.
Umerov and Austin coordinated the next steps, including the upcoming meeting of the Ramstein Contact Group in early January. According to the Ukrainian minister, this will be an important platform for strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities.
US aid to Ukraine
US is so far Ukraine's largest partner in providing military assistance. Washington has delivered missile systems, combat vehicles, artillery, ammunition, and missiles to Ukrainian forces.
However, the US will see a change in its presidency next month. Republican Donald Trump is set to replace Democrat Joe Biden in office. There are concerns that Trump might reduce aid to Ukraine.
According to Reuters, the Biden administration is preparing a $1.2 billion military aid package for Ukraine. This will use the remaining funds allocated for the purchase of new weapons for Ukraine.
