On Friday, December 13, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov met with European Union Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius in Kyiv. The two discussed a range of issues, reports Ukraine's Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov.

“We discussed the security situation and the threats posed by the escalation of Russian aggression. We aim to make our cooperation with each partner even more effective in 2025,” Umerov wrote.

To achieve this, Umerov explained that an analysis of the support Ukraine had received in previous years had begun. New areas of cooperation were also outlined, including:

  • Utilizing revenues from frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine;
  • Expanding the EUMAM training mission for the preparation of Ukrainian soldiers;
  • Investing in Ukraine’s defense sector to strengthen domestic production.

Umerov and Kubilius also paid special attention to preparing strategic reserve brigades. Negotiations are already underway with several European countries to equip and train Ukrainian units. Umerov also mentioned that Ukraine expects the EU to play a coordinating role in accelerating these agreements.

"Our goal is to provide our military with everything necessary to bring about a just peace. I thank Andrius Kubilius for his consistent support of Ukraine. Without a strong Ukraine, stability and security on the European continent are impossible,” the Defense Minister concluded.

Notably, Mykhailo Drapatyi, Commander of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, announced changes in military training. He stated that the Land Forces now require reforms and a modern approach to developing the troops' capabilities.
