Russian forces are attempting to break through to Pokrovsk in Ukraine's Donetsk region by using infiltration tactics with small assault units and sabotage groups. Ukrainian Defense Forces are actively countering these attempts, reports Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi.

According to Syrskyi, the situation is most difficult in the Pokrovsk, Dobropillia, and Novopavlivka directions. Russian troops are trying to storm key urban clusters and are searching for weak spots in Ukraine's defenses.

"At the same time, the Russians are using a tactic of total infiltration, increasing sabotage activities in our rear areas. This is how they are trying to penetrate Pokrovsk. However, Russian sabotage and small infantry groups are being neutralized," the General said.

Syrskyi added that counter-sabotage reserves have been created and deployed to combat these Russian reconnaissance and infantry groups. Their mission is to locate and destroy enemy sabotage teams.

In addition to addressing the threat of small Russian infantry groups, Syrskyi discussed with frontline commanders ways to strengthen defensive resilience. They focused on fortifying positions with engineering solutions, setting up minefields and other explosive and non-explosive barriers, building fortifications, and constructing anti-drone tunnels.

"This work is ongoing, but it needs to be more proactive, broader, and systematic. I have identified other critical issues. Orders have been issued to ensure effective defense and address these problems on the ground," Syrskyi added.

Russians are trying to infiltrate Pokrovsk

In late July, Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi reported that a Russian sabotage group had managed to infiltrate Pokrovsk. Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled the assaults and cleared the area.

Ukrainian defenders say Russian sabotage groups are being destroyed before they can approach the city. According to ISW analysts, as of July 31, Ukrainian forces recently advanced near northern Lysivka in the Pokrovsk direction.

British intelligence believes Russian forces have achieved some tactical gains in the area. However, they paid a staggering price for these advances.
