Ukraine's Army Chief names territory liberated from Russian occupation in August

August 2025 was a month of major tests for the Ukrainian military, but it also brought many positive results, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reports.
According to Syrskyi, the main efforts were focused on deterring the enemy, inflicting losses on him, and recovering lost territories.
Ukraine's Army Chief emphasized that the troops covered Ukrainian cities from missile and drone strikes, and also struck deep into Russia.
Organizational changes in Ukrainian troops
Syrskyi noted that in August, the Ukrainian Armed Forces completed the transition to a corps management system. "This reform is beginning to show results. Command and control of troops is becoming more effective and efficient," the Commander-in-Chief added.
Despite facing an enemy with threefold numerical superiority, Ukrainian forces prevented the realization of its plans.
Losses and gains on frontline
Syrskyi reported that in the Dobropillia direction, Russians captured 13.5 square kilometers but lost 25.5 square kilometers.
In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian troops seized 5 square kilometers, while Ukraine's Defense Forces regained control over 26 square kilometers.
No territory was lost in the Huliaipole and Prydniprovkyi directions, and in the Northern Slobozhanskyi direction, another 4 square kilometers were recaptured.
Overall, in August, Ukrainian troops regained control of 58 square kilometers of territory and liberated several settlements.
Strikes on Russia
"During this period, our Deep Strike assets hit 60 targets on Russian territory," Syrskyi emphasized.
Furthermore, drones struck over 67,000 enemy objects, and the effectiveness of the Middle Strike program increased by 25%.
Army Chief also added that Ukrainian forces inflicted 28,790 casualties on Russian personnel in August, and since the beginning of 2025, total losses reached 297,350.
Further objectives
"We still have a lot of work ahead, but we are defending our land, and we are on the right course: to wear down the enemy, to destroy it, and to achieve the results Ukraine needs," the Commander-in-Chief stressed.
According to DeepState, Russia has occupied less than 1% of Ukraine's territory during the past 1,010 days of full-scale war - around 5,800 square kilometers.
The exhausting Russian offensive of 2025 continues without significant territorial gains. Moscow's forces advanced slowly, capturing 2,033 square kilometers between May and August, which accounts for just 0.3% of Ukraine's total area.
