Ukraine's air defenses intercept just 1 of 27 Russian ballistic missiles overnight

Overnight on August 1, Russia attacked Ukraine with 35 missiles and 185 attack drones. Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept just one of the 27 ballistic missiles launched at the country, according to the Ukrainian Air Force and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
This night, Russian forces launched 35 missiles and 185 drones of various types at Ukraine:
- Four Zircon/Oniks anti-ship missiles, launched from areas of Russia's Kursk and Rostov regions;
- 27 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles, launched from areas of Russia's Bryansk and Kursk regions;
- Two Kh-31 anti-radiation missiles and two Kh-59/69 guided aerial missiles, launched from the Black Sea;
- 185 attack drones, including Shahed drones, jet-powered drones, Gerbera and Italmas drones, Bundel loitering munitions, and Parody-type decoy drones, were launched from Bryansk, Kursk, and Oryol in Russia, as well as from occupied Donetsk and Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea.
The main target of the attack was the Kyiv region. Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkiv and Poltava regions were also targeted.
According to preliminary data, as of 9:30 a.m., Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 156 targets — two missiles and 154 drones of various types:
- One Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missile;
- One Kh-59/69 guided aerial missile;
- 154 enemy drones of various types.
As of 9:30 a.m., preliminary reports indicated that four anti-ship missiles and 26 ballistic missiles had hit their targets, along with 23 attack drones at 21 locations. Debris from intercepted targets fell at two locations. Three missiles failed to reach their targets.
According to Zelenskyy, 27 of the 35 missiles launched at Ukraine were ballistic. Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept only one of the 27 ballistic missiles due to a shortage of Patriot interceptors.
“And it is this shortage of ballistic missile interceptors that only encourages Russia to launch such attacks that take human lives,” the president emphasized.
Missile attack on Kyiv
As previously reported, Russian forces launched a massive ballistic missile attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region overnight on August 1.
The attack killed nine people and injured another 30, including four children.
Destruction and fires were reported in five districts of the capital: Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Dniprovskyi and Pecherskyi.
