Ukraine reveals details of Russian oligarch Abramovich's visit to Kyiv

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi commented on the circumstances of the visit of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich to Kyiv in May during a briefing.
Tykhyi was asked who organized the visit, how exactly Abramovich traveled to Kyiv, and whom he met with, apart from the President.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson avoided giving specific answers but confirmed one fact — the oligarch had arrived in the Ukrainian capital by land transport.
"As for the specific details of organizing Abramovich’s visit, I won’t surprise you with anything interesting here. And what difference does it make? Does it matter how he traveled — by train, by car, or how? We can say for sure he did not fly by plane, that is obvious, I think," Tykhyi said.
The MFA spokesperson also reminded that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already openly spoken about his contact with the Russian oligarch.
"I can just say that the President of Ukraine uses every, even the smallest opportunity, to bring peace closer. If there is a chance to advance peace efforts in any way, the President of Ukraine will use it," Tykhyi added.
In May 2026, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich visited Kyiv to personally learn Ukraine’s position on ending the war.
In an interview with Sky News, Zelenskyy confirmed the meeting with Abramovich and clarified that he came at the initiative of the Russian side and delivered a message from Vladimir Putin.
Earlier, Zelenskyy raised the issue of the money from the sale of the Chelsea football club, which belonged to Abramovich, during talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London.
The British government has earmarked £2.4 billion from the sale for humanitarian needs in Ukraine, but the funds have not yet been transferred.
