The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has responded to the decision of the International Court of Justice in a lawsuit against Russia over violations of the conventions on terrorism and racial discrimination, which was announced yesterday, January 31.

International Court of Justice ruled on the merits of Ukraine's case against Russia regarding the application of the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism, and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Thus, the Court found that Russia had violated both international treaties.

"This is the first time in its history that the International Court of Justice has reached a final judgment on Russia’s violations of international law," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasizes.

It also emphasized that the decision of the UN Court "leaves no doubt that the Russian Federation is in violation of international law."

"Ukraine remains committed to pursuing justice and accountability for all of Russia’s illegal acts, including the full-scale invasion Russia launched in 2022," the Ministry emphasizes.

UN court to hear Ukraine's lawsuit against Russia on January 31

Yesterday the International Court of Justice announced the final decision in Ukraine's lawsuit against Russia in the case of violation of the Conventions on the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination in Donbas and Crimea.

The UN Court recognized Russia's violation of certain parts of the Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism.

The court session at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands) was broadcast live.

Ukraine filed this lawsuit against Russia with the UN Court on January 16, 2017, and it is related to the aggression of the invaders in Crimea and Donbas. The lawsuit alleges that the Kremlin has violated two conventions: on combating the financing of terrorism and on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination.
