Ukraine matters to US security - Pentagon chief names reasons
Ukraine is important to US security, states Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin. The war unleashed by Russia is a direct threat to European security and a challenge to NATO.
The US Secretary of Defense emphasized that there are four obvious reasons why Ukraine is important to US security.
“Putin’s war is a direct threat to European security, a clear challenge to our NATO allies, an attack on our shared values, and a frontal assault on the rules-based international order that keeps us all safe,” Austin said.
He believes that there is no “silver bullet” to stop Putin's attack on Ukraine. Only joint assistance is important.
“If Ukraine falls under Putin’s boot, all of Europe will fall under Putin’s shadow,” the Pentagon chief added.
Austin urged allies to continue to resist Russia's aggression, which is supported by other autocrats, from North Korea to Iran.
US assistance to Ukraine
The United States is one of Ukraine's most important allies. Washington provides Ukraine with military assistance, including multiple-launch rocket systems, missiles, armored vehicles, air defense systems, ammunition, and other weapons. The United States has joined the training of the Ukrainian military, including pilots.
The United States provides financial assistance to Ukraine to support the budget during the war.
On November 1, the United States announced a new $425 million arms package for Ukraine. It includes ammunition for air defense and HIMARS, missiles for man-portable air defense systems, Javelin anti-tank systems, Stryker armored personnel carriers, and more.
