Ukraine has made significant positive strides in its energy infrastructure after the attacks inflicted by Russia during the winter, according to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal.

He mentioned that on Sunday, July 16, Ukraine imported electricity from Poland for the first time through the modernized interstate power transmission line. In May, "Ukrenergo" (National Power Company of Ukraine) specialists and their Polish colleagues launched this line in May. On Sunday, the Ukrainian energy system received an additional 800 MW of capacity during the evening peak consumption through this line. Shmyhal emphasized that this is an essential element of their energy resilience.

Russian massive shelling in winter

During the winter, Russian occupiers attacked Ukraine's energy system, leading "Ukrenergo" to implement emergency and scheduled power outages. The emergency shutdowns occurred when there was a need to balance the energy system at a higher capacity than initially planned.

The head of "Ukrenergo," Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, mentioned that thanks to active imports and humanitarian assistance, Ukraine managed to get through the past winter without prolonged blackouts.

The Cabinet of Ministers increased the electricity tariff for the population from June 1, from 1.68 UAH/kW-h to 2.64 UAH/kW-h. According to the Ministry of Energy, the amounts in Ukrainians' utility bills are expected to increase by approximately 250 UAH after the tariff hike.
