Ukraine has appealed to the European Commissioner for Energy because of the threats made by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. All EU countries must comply with the current rules, states Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko.

“We would really like everyone in the EU to adhere to the norms and regulations that exist today,” Halushchenko emphasized.

According to him, it would be absolutely impossible to make a decision of the kind Fico says, unanimously.

“If there are any attempts to justify such a decision, it will still be a violation of the relevant European Commission regulations. Today I have sent a letter to the EU Energy Commissioner, ENTSO-E, and the Energy Community to ensure that these issues are addressed appropriately in terms of compliance with the law,” the minister explained.

Threats from Fico

Ukraine has decided to stop the transit of Russian gas to Europe as of January 1, 2025. In turn, this will affect Slovakia, which depends on Russian gas.

Kyiv immediately rejected any options for continuing transit, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine could transport gas to Europe, but only if it was not Russian.

Last week, Fico met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. During the meeting, they discussed Kyiv's refusal to transit Russian gas.

After that, Slovak Prime Minister Fico threatened to cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine.

RBC-Ukraine wrote that Fico's threats to cut off electricity supplies would not affect Ukraine's energy supply.

Moreover, according to Zelenskyy, Fico's policy could harm Slovakia itself.
